As the ‘fight of the century’ winds down manny people start to question the hype surrounding the fight and its lack of dramatic action. What happened why did a fight that was so important and had so much riding on it snooze through the 12 rounds and saw a docile Pacquiao look complacent? The answer is Floyd Mayweather, no matter what your question is. He made the fight, he made the hype, he made Pacquiao look average and he made the fight boring… and he made over 200 Million doing so.
Boxing, a thinking mans game.
What is it that Mayweather does that makes opponets fall apart and why cant more people do that. As a coach I have seen hundred of difrent body types and levles of athleticisim, from what i have seen there is definatly athletic attributes that make some things easier. However this athleticism has to be guided in the right direction or else you will end up with an athletic but not nesecarily advanced practitioner. Roy Jones Jr is perhaps the most athletically gifted person, not just in boxing but in anything according to Mackie Shilstone.
But look at him here, he is attempting to emulate the Michigan shell, and for anyone who knows this move you can see his body isn’t moving right. He is better at it than the suit next to him who cant even pivot or hold his hands up, but Roy, if you Boxed like this, no doubt you would get ko’ed.
The Why not the How
Now i’m not going to give you an instructional on how to use the system Floyd Mayweather puts upon people. One because I can tell you no matter how much I decode Floyd… there is always more to it. And secondly, I don’t want anyone half using this system or worse trying to copy it. Thankfully people who don’t know very much about boxing wont understand anything that i’m saying and probably will have a dismissive attitude to anything new anyway, which is exactly why they aren’t very good, more on this later. Now more importantly why is it such a gifted boxer as Roy jones, cant move like Floyd. He is a boxer, a great one, could have even been the greatest if circumstances did lead him to train with Emanuel Steward. But why cant he do what Floyd does, its not lack of interest in the sport, or desire to win. The reason im focusing of Roy Jones is he is perhaps the only person that has been able to crack the code on the Michigan shell. HE KNOWS how to beat it, meaning he knows how it works. But he still doesn’t box like this.
What floyd does
I don’t want to speculate as to why Roy Jones Jr may not have developed to a more advanced style as his career progressed, but I cant tell you one thing about Floyd. He is a Huge Roy Jones fan, I know this because his first say 10 fights he boxed in style he was trying to copy of Jones. Roy was on the top of the world at the time young floyd was turning pro so it makes sense he would copy such an amazing fighter. So what does Floyd do? Floyd simply is a boxing sponge, he has soaked up all the Michigan skills of his family and local boxers and soaked up the style that he has seen in other successful boxers, and then combined them into artistry. He has a system that is ALMOST flawless, I say this because there are things that can be done to beat it. But they are not easy things to do athletically, focus wise and require a great knowledge and repertoire of boxing moves that will need to be drawn upon instantly. And then it becomes a thinking game.
Why aren’t most people that good
I like basketball, I have a few basketball hats, i’ll shoot a hoop if the balls near by, might even jump in a half court game if there was one going on in front of me. But as soon as you start telling me i might have to learn this, or practice that, well you lost me. And boxing is no different. Well except for one thing and that is because it is fighting there is an ego thing and like anything people don’t want to show weakness or admit they have no idea or even worse think they are actually good. Non combative sports don’t suffer from the same ‘I got this’ attitude people bring to the fight game. These two things are unfortunately the beginning of the end for development of your Boxing skill. Ego, is the enemy, but it is also the energy, trying to find a balance between being a beginner in your attitude and being confident in your abilities is a hard mix to perfect. What it comes down to is if you are NOT interested in something, not truly, it is very hard to master it. The hours, weeks, years, failures and constant undermining by those who don’t know or believe will keep you down. So how did Floyd Mayweather do it? The answer is he didn’t, we did. We doubted him, he went to training, we laughed at him, he went to training, we said he wasn’t the best, he went to training, we said this guy or that guy would beat him, he went to training we said so many thing not respecting or understanding that he is THE boxing genius, the gifted master, the most skilled fighter of all time… That he went on to prove us wrong.
